lululemon Studio iOS App
Overview
lululemon Studio is the evolution of MIRROR, the original connected fitness mirror acquired by lululemon in 2020.
I was recruited into the role of head of product design, where I oversaw product design for the core iOS and Android Apps, the on-screen UX/UI for The Mirror hardware, and lululemon Studio’s web experiences. I am a hands on design manager directly involved in interaction design as well as setting the aesthetic approach for visual design. My team crafted the UX and the visual design for all lululemon Studio digital products.

Try the prototype at left. My team and I, in close partnership with engineering, worked to integrate a complex array of business and compliance needs into one simple flow for new users.
Customer Hypothesis
Customer Development at Scale
My design team worked closely with our data analytics team to ground our personas in purchase and usage data. We also leveraged a deep McKinsey study conducted for lululemon to inform our customer hypothesis. We then tested our products with real customers in rapid launches, as well as in prototype user testing.
I have long been a believer in Steve Blank’s Customer Development approach, in which we seek to develop customers, and confidence in product market fit in parallel with the development of the product. For more on Blank’s approach, there is an overview of approach taught at Stanford here.
Three Driving Goals for the New App
Rebranding and Creating Studio’s Digital-only Product
One - Rebrand
This case study looks at three initiatives that we built out in the lululemon Studio App. The first, was a holistic rebrand, taking the product from its original MIRROR identity to the lululemon Studio identity, within the larger digital lululemon ecosystem.
Two - Digital Product
The second is the creation of a digital-only app based product, built inside the app, which allows a second membership tier leveraging the same fitness content, without needing to have the Mirror hardware.
Three - Partner Content (Consider swapping two and three order)
The last part of the case study will look at our partner collaboration, which we did based on market research and user feedback. Our customers wanted to be able to take a workout at Rumble downtown, then meditate at home (either with The Mirror or without.)
Case Study Approach - Please Exlpore the Figma Files
This case study is structured around three Figma files, which you can explore in your browser. The primary views are loaded up in the frames below, if you’re looking for an exec summary. If you have time to dive in, please click the images and explore the work in full.
Rebrand
From MIRROR to lululemon Studio
In the Figma above, you can explore the app before and after the rebrand, as well as read the driving influence behind our approach. Our goal was to bring the product into the lululemon ecosystem, and to make working out with lululemon Studio as inviting and as effortless as possible.
The Digital Product
Adding a New Business Vertical
The second goal for the app was the creation of a digital-only app based product, built inside the existing app, which allows a second membership tier leveraging the same fitness content, without needing to have the Mirror hardware.
This product was designed to work for a post-pandemic world where our customers were returning to in-person workouts. The goal was to enable our users to work out anywhere: at home when that was convenient, on the go, or with our in-person partner studios.
Partner Channel Content
Multi-modal Product: Workout at Home, On the Go, or In-person
The last part of the case study will look at our partner collaboration, which we did based on market research and user feedback. Our customers wanted to be able to take a workout at Rumble downtown, then meditate at home (either with The Mirror or without.)

Final Product Overview and Visual Design
The new app built upon the original vision of The Mirror; integrating the previous product and the Mirror team into the broader lululemon ecosystem while enabling an entirely new subscription revenue stream and daily digital interaction with retail guests (a first for lululemon.)
